MTS (meaning "Mobile TeleSystems") is the largest mobile operator in Russia and CIS.

The Customer goal was to organize a data transmission (> 2Mpbs) for the new base station of GSM 900 type.

In 2007 MTS decided to build a base station in the village Sogom. There were no mobile services provided in that village.

The village is located in a remote area, so the organization of the last mile was required to use a non-standard solution.

Initially, it was decided to construct an antenna post for satellite earth station (SES) and to rent a satellite channel with a capacity of 2Mbps. The solution required high CAPEX for the construction of the SES and high OPEX for the rented satellite channel.

The nearest base station was BS # 8681, located in Khanty-Mansiysk (line-of-sight distance 76 km). The used radios operate at classical bands (6-8 GHz), so parabolic antennas of large diameter were required. This option couldn't be realized, because of low load-bearing capacity of the antenna mast structure.

Youncta's solution

Comparing several options, MTS decided to choose Youcnta's Y-Haul.

  • Frequency range: 300-700 MHz ;
  • QPSK to 64QAM for longer hops and/or increased capacity ;
  • Different channel bandwidth: 1.75-12 MHz;
  • Fast Ethernet for Y-Haul TDD and Fast Ethernet plus E1 for Y-Haul FDD Interfaces available.

The Y-Haul is a new generation of UHF/VHF point-to-point wireless communication system. It provides TDM and Ethernet data transmitting over incredible long-range distances, supporting up to 29 Mbps of aggregate data traffic. Y-Haul operates over long hops even in nLOS conditions. Compared with dish antennas, Y-Haul's antennas are light weight and have almost no wind load.

Comparing several options, MTS decided to choose Youcnta's Y-Haul.
  • Antennas are low-weight, so they could been mounted on the AMS;
  • The frequency range allows to use the equipment over long hops even in nLOS conditions.
The installed radio operates on semi-closed intervals 75.5 km. The equipment works from 2007 to present. It is of importance to note that the temperatures in winter reaches up to -50 C.
